How Declutter and Organize your Garage Space
I have 22 years of experience in interior design and garage organization. I use a simple method to declutter and enhance these spaces. I often use the 20/20 rule, which was developed by The Minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. This rule suggests that if you can replace an item in less than 20 minutes for under $20, it’s not worth keeping.
As you prepare to declutter your garage and make room for remodelling or new storage solutions, consider the following steps:
The 20/20 Rule in Action
Start by identifying items with no sentimental value that can easily be replaced for under $20. This includes things like old gardening supplies, unused tools, or small household items that have been gathering dust for years. If you rarely use something, it’s time to let it go.
Important Questions to Ask Before Decluttering
- Do you have an attachment to the item, and do you have a specific place for it?
If an item has sentimental value or a dedicated spot, consider keeping it.
- How often do you use the item, and is it still useful for your needs?
If you rarely use something or it’s no longer relevant to your current skills or lifestyle, it’s time to part ways.
- Can someone else benefit from the item?
If you have a gardening tool that you no longer use because of a gardener, consider giving it away. You could also donate it to someone who needs it.
- Would you repurchase the item if you gave it away?
If you think you’ll buy the item again in the future, it might be worth keeping. Otherwise, let it go.
- Making Space for New Possibilities
By following these guidelines, you’ll create a more organized and functional garage. After cleaning your garage, you may discover it can be used for something new, such as a laundry room or a workshop.
Decluttering is the first step toward transforming your garage into a space that works better for you. Remember, the goal is to create a functional, organized, and enjoyable space. So, start small, stay focused, and enjoy the process of reclaiming your garage!
